Understanding APR & Borrowing Costs

The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) provides an objective apples-to-apples metric to evaluate the real cost of personal installment loans.

What APR Means

The Annual Percentage Rate represents the annualized cost of credit expressed as a percentage. Mandated by the federal Truth in Lending Act (TILA), APR accounts for both the baseline interest rate and mandatory upfront fees.

APR vs. Interest Rate

An interest rate accounts solely for the periodic charge assessed on the unpaid principal balance. If a lender charges a 5% origination fee, the APR will be significantly higher than the stated interest rate.

Why APR Matters

Without APR, a lender advertising an attractive 9.99% interest rate with a high 8% origination fee could appear cheaper than a 11.99% rate with zero fees. APR standardizes both into a unified comparison metric.

REPRESENTATIVE PARAMETERS

The Three Sticks Lending Representative APR Range

Installment loans featured across our network carry representative APRs from 5.99% to 35.99%, with terms from 6 to 60 months and amounts from $200 to $5,000.

Factors Influencing Your Actual APR

  • Credit Score & History: Higher credit scores generally correlate with lower risk tiers and lower APRs.
  • Verifiable Income & Debt Ratio: A healthy debt-to-income (DTI) ratio signals stronger ability to service new obligations.
  • Requested Term Length: Shorter loan terms may qualify for lower APR brackets than extended multi-year terms.
  • State Usury Limits: Many states impose strict statutory interest rate caps on consumer loans.

Why Monthly Payment Alone Is Misleading

Borrowers often look only at whether a monthly installment fits into their current paycheck. However, stretching a $3,000 loan over 60 months produces a low monthly payment but dramatically higher cumulative interest than a 24-month term.

Always review the total repayment amount and finance charges in the Truth in Lending box before signing an agreement.
